ADJUSTSTABLE SPEED DRIVE (ASD)

Also known as a “DC Drive”. A device to control the speed and efficiency of DC electric motors. The device operates by taking AC from the distribution system and rectifying it to power on a DC bus. The drive then controls the DC voltage level that powers the motor. Since the speed of a DC motor is proportional to the voltage level of the DC supply, the speed can be adjusted over a wide range. (see Inverter; Rectifier; AC Power; DC Power; Variable Frequency Drive)
