VARIABLE FREQUENCY DRIVE (VFD)

A device to control the speed and efficiency of AC electric motors. The device operates by taking AC from the distribution system and rectifying it to power on a DC bus. An inverter with the capability to produce variable output frequencies then re-converts the DC to AC that powers the motor. Since the speed of an AC motor is proportional to the frequency of the AC supply, the speed can be adjusted over a wide range. (see: Adjustable Speed Drive; AC Power; DC Power; Rectifier; Inverter; SCRi)
