Glossary Of Terms

A passive filter consisting of inductors, capacitors, and resistors designed to eliminate one or more harmonics. The most common variety is an inductor in series with a shunt capacitor. When tuned to the proper harmonic frequency and connected phase-to-phase in a 3-phase distribution system, this shunt filter absorbs harmonic currents at the point where it is connected, keeping them from flowing back to the transformer.
