Glossary Of Terms

SHIELD

As normally applied to instrumentation cables, refers to a conductive sheath (usually metallic) applied, over the insulation of a conductor or conductors, for the purpose of reducing the induction of electrical noise from one wire to another. The shield is usually grounded so that unwanted currents are transferred to the grounding system, rather than to the wires in the circuit. (see: Conductor; Current; Ground)
